FAQs
Q: CAN I COPY THE PICTURES OFF YOUR WEB SITE.
A: No. Taking someone else's interlectual property is theft. It's against the law and we take a very unsympathetic view of copyright theft. The cost of creating images is enormous. Typically, the fuel bill for a weekend is in the region of £50, and trips abroad can cost up to £1000 or more. However, we take a sympathetic view where we have been hosted by a club or if you are in the picture, and may let you have a low resolution copy at no charge.
Q: WHY DON'T YOU PUT DETAILED CAPTIONS AGAINST EACH PHOTOGRAPH?
A: There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, captioning is very time consuming, mainly because it is not always easy to identify players who are less well known. Programmes at England Hockey League matches (from which we could hopefully identify players) are notoriously inaccurate, which does not help. We aim to get pictures on the site as soon as possible and captioning would delay this process. But the main reason is that we would like you to visit our main web site at www.TalkHockeyRadio.co.uk. where you will find our on-line magazine HockeyTalk. A lot of the images from this site are in the magazine, with captions!
Q: I'M INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY. WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
A: Most matches are shot with a Nikon D3s and a Nikon 400mm 2.8 VR lens, sometimes supported by a D3 with a 70-200mm lens mounted on it. We've recently acquired a Nikon D4, which tends now to be our first choice camera, but the D3s and the D3 still get used regularly. Both are great cameras. We also use a Nikon D700 and a variety of other lenses. We even still use a D300 from time to tine.
Q: HOW DO YOU SELECT THE MATCHES YOU GO TO?
A: Our resources are finite so we have to choose carefully. We try to cover all England and GB matches in England and Europe as much as we can. We usually cover at least three EuroHockey League venues, sometimes all four. In the UK we try and split ourselves between men's and women's hockey at a ratio of about 2:1. The reason for that is that we get more visitors to the site for men's matches than women's by a substantial margin. Being based in the South of England there is an unavoidable bias towards the South, but we endeavour to shoot matches were the visiting club is from outside of the South area.
Q: A LOT OF YOUR PICTURES APPEAR IN 'PUSH' MAGAZINE, AND YOU WRITE FOR 'PUSH'. WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION WITH THEM?
A: We are just good friends! We support the need for an independent print magazine covering hockey in the UK, so so we do try to co-operate and help them as much as we can. We encourage everyone interested in hockey to buy 'Push' as well as visit our own site.
Q: WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST HOCKEY EVENTS YOU HAVE SHOT?
A: Undoubtedly the London 2012 Olympic Games. But we were also at the 2006 World Cup in Monchengladbach. Probably our proudest moment was shooting the 2009 European Championships in Amsterdam where England's men beat Germany in the Final.
Q: I'VE HEARD YOU'RE GIVING UP. IS THIS TRUE?
A: You've got to be joking! What is actually happening is that after the World Cup in The Hague we are cutting back on foreign travel and concentrating on domestic hockey. In the Summer of 2014 we are launching a new web site, HockeyInEngland, which will replace TalkHockeyRadio. However, we still plan to keep HockeyImages going. Unfortunately, despite an offer of accreditation, we will not be going to the Commonwealth Games.
